mercado sin nombre website

Mercado Sin Nombre is a specialty café in East Austin, Texas built around two deeply intentional things: Mexican heirloom corn and carefully sourced Mexican coffee. Every bean is imported from small farms in Mexico, then roasted locally in Austin.

The Challenge

The client came in with a clear boundary: they did not want to look like a Mexican restaurant or a Tex-Mex brand. The brand has deep cultural roots and completely ignoring that would have felt dishonest. But leaning into visual clichés associated with Mexican food and beverage brands would have undersold what Mercado Sin Nombre actually is: a specialty coffee concept that belongs in the same conversation as any serious third-wave café, anywhere in the world.

The site also needed to work hard on a functional level. Mercado Sin Nombre isn't just a café, it's also an online coffee shop, a wholesale supplier, a catering operation, a coffee cart for events, and a press-worthy destination that's earned high recognition.

My Thinking

The cultural specificity question shaped almost every visual decision. Rather than relying on color palettes or patterns that would read as overtly "Mexican," I leaned into the brand's actual identity the corn. The heirloom corn icon used in the footer and throughout the brand system is earthy, specific, and rooted in the real story of what they do, without borrowing from a visual shorthand. The typography and overall aesthetic were calibrated to feel more like East Austin.

For the navigation challenge, I made a deliberate choice to let coffee selling and brand storytelling anchor the experience, with the other revenue streams (wholesale, catering, coffee cart) accessible but secondary. The homepage hierarchy moves you through who they are, what they're sourcing, what you can buy, and where they've been recognized. The press section earns its place because it validates the brand without the brand having to make that case themselves.

The Result

The site launched and has since served as the brand's digital home through a period of significant growth. Visitors can move from learning about the brand to buying coffee to booking the coffee cart to reading press coverage without ever losing the thread of what Mercado Sin Nombre actually is.
